Electronic Double Up Food Bucks System
My Epic Idea is creating a positive impact with technology
The Double Up Food Bucks program began in 2010 using tokens to signify the rewards that people had earned. This is how every farmers’ market that participated in the program kept track of their customers rewards. It proved to be a tedious method, forcing the vendors and the markets to count all of the tokens after each day of business. When the Flint Farmers’ Market joined the program they decided that there had to be a better way, they wanted an electronic solution. After searching for a solution from companies around the country, including Silicon Valley, that solution was found in the Market’s back yard with Epic.
The new electronic system would allow for an easier method for tracking sales and would eliminate the need for wooden tokens. Simplified tracking and analytics allowed for an easy, one card solution for both customers and vendors. The vendors would not have to tediously count the tokens they redeemed. With the system Epic designed and programmed it would all be done automatically and with the press of a few buttons the vendors at the Flint Farmers’ Market could print out a report that would track their sales; this was in sharp contrast to other markets which would need to use pencil and paper to figure how much the Double Up program had increased their sales.
This system is currently still in use and has already made a massive positive impact at the Flint Farmers’ Market and in the Flint community. The electronic system for the Double Up Food Bucks program is another example of how the staff at Epic uses innovation and dedication to achieve the improbable.
